Monster of the Week

Debutante

These apparent humans are secretly fae. They emerge from the sidhe to try to have a very good party. Typically, they appear as a young lady who is just now being introduced to society. Some of them appear as a young squire from a far away place, and rarely they will appear as a travelling bard. Their only goal is to be the center of attention at any party, and they can bear no other person to upstage them.

Debutantes are, in the end, shapechangers, made of leaves, worms, or other detritus. They seem to be aware and sapient when they are not wearing forms, but look like hastily made effigies. Every one of the debutantes has a condition which turns them from their human form into their detritus form, and then they quickly blow away in the wind. Many a suitor has managed to take a token from a dazzling beauty who lit up the party, only to have them immediately blow away, dissipating before their very eyes. Stories abound of the poor fool pining after a lover they meant once, never to see again.

In truth, these fae are entirely without motivation other than wanting to be the center of attention. The way they toy with affection, inspire heartache, bring joy, and cause rifts amongst the oldest of friends and lovers, is not inspired by any desire other than attention. This causes many social events to be ruined by the debutante showing up, without their knowledge or care. Whether they are truly people, or simply some sort of strange fae construct, remains completely unknown to mortal scholars, although the fae certainly know their origin.

Traits

Formed Of Detritus: The Debutante is not fully a being, it's formed of detritus, usually by another fae. The will of their creator is used to simply enjoy a single night of debauchery and joy, and then return to the fae that created it. Allowing the fae to have a single night without needing to obey the rules, and only keep their happy memories. When the debutante expires, the memories of the night return to the fae who created it. These memories can be captured by anything that can stop the transit of a spirit.

Grand Finale: When the fae creates a debutante, they must create a single goal for them. This is the debutante's only Belief, the thing they want to accomplish. Be asked for their hand in marriage, receive a kiss from the prince, or win a competition. When this Belief is accomplished, the debutante immediately reverts to detritus and returns to the fae who created it. If a fae wishes it can give the debutante up to two instincts that, if broken, will immediately render the create back to detritus as well, this is typically done to keep the creature out of trouble, protect rules they care about, or, most commonly, prevent unwanted memories. A common example is that a debutante might not ever speak to a priest, might avoid receiving any gifts, or be not allowed to sleep.

Being of Fae: The debutante is a being from the world of the fae. The land beyond the sidhe. This means that they are not of this world. They can be repelled or trapped using Folklore or Circination or other powers that work on beings from other worlds. They can be seen by second sight, and this state can be revealed with an Ob2 Aura Reading test. They however are not spiritual beings and therefore don't require a spirit weapon to harm or interact with.

Unbound By Law: Fae are creatures of law at their very being. Every fae follows customs, rules, and contracts at their very core. By obeying etiquette one can manage the fae. However, a Debutante is not bound by those rules. It is because of this that the fae send them into the world, they are sent to allow the fae to experience a day without rules. No powers that can bind fae but not spirits work on them. No contract magic can bind them. When a debutante lies they do so freely (though not always well). And this is the sweetest nectar of the fae.

Debutante Wine

The memories that make up the single night of freedom are very valuable in the fae realm. These are moments of freedom from the rigid structure of fae society for them. This means that these memories are regularly stolen by all sorts of minor magicians and witches. These memories are then placed in magically created casks (Ob 4 Circination to mark the casks with the markings to contain them). After a season, the memories will begin to melt into a mush as the detritus they're stored in liquifies. Once the liquid is formed, they can be added to the juice of red grapes in order to stabilize it.

The juice must then sit in the casks for another month, and then a source of sugar brought to them. Typically this is in the form of additional juice, but can also be pure crystal form or in a simple syrup. Once this begins to alcoholize more directly, the detritus becomes much safer to drink. This substance is called by the fae, debutante wine. Drinking it causes a minor alcoholic rush, but also, causes the drinker to experience the emotions contained in the memories used to vint it. Successfully getting this effect while also keeping the wine drinkable is an Ob6 Vintner test. Using white grapes never results in the memories staying within the wine. A single debutante's memories can create a single cask of wine.

The fae consider debutante wine one of the most potent and magical drinks, and it can be sold to them at an unreasonable price (a bottle of Debutante Wine is considered 8D of cash when dealing with the Fae, though must all be spent at once, or gives a +3D advantage when making a deal with them where a bribe would help). The problem with this wine is that the fae who created the debutante will almost always want revenge for the death of their creation. The fae do not speak of when or how they create debutantes, but they do consider them a part of themselves. Therefore, showing a fae a bottle of wine made from their own debutante is an insult on par with offering them their own severed hand pickled in a jar.
