About This Project

Why This Project

This is a project to force myself to write more. Really - it's a project to make myself hit deadlines more. Hence the enforced weekly aspect of it. The Burning Wheel monster is really just because I'm running (and playing, we share the GM role) Burning Wheel, and I want to be able to inject A Weird Creature into my games. I am the kind of GM who rarely plans, and when I do plan it's mostly looking at the party's beliefs and trying to figure out how to make them work together. This means I will often not have prebuilt any sort of creature for my group to encounter. Of course, that doesn't mean that I really want to create creatures made of gnashing teeth and claws and unreasoning ferocity. To quote the AD&D Monster Manual:

The term "monster" is used throughout this work in two manners. Its first, and most important, meaning is to designate any creature encountered — hostile or otherwise, human, humanoid, or beast. Until the encountering party determines what they have come upon, it is a monster. The secondary usage of the term is in the usual sense: a horrible or wicked creature of some sort, Thus, a "monster" is encountered during the course of a dungeon expedition, and it is discovered to be an evil high priest, who just might turn out to be a monster in the other sense as well.
That being said I don't want to give these monsters Beliefs and possibly not even Instincts. The reason I am writing them is to drop them into situations, meaning I'll want to give them their own Beliefs and possibly Instincts to match their role in the story. These monsters, as written, are not like the Illustrated Bestiary monsters from the Monster Burner of old, they are, well, less important monsters that inhabit a fantastical world. They should not be unimportant, their presence should impose upon the world, but not always upon the situation. Unless the situation is them imposing.

Who Am I

I am Silverwizard. I'm a hacker by trade, and a writer for fun sometimes, and a player of RPGs when I can.

What Is The Release Schedule

Weekly. What day? Who can say. What time? No one knows. But the goal is to have a monster up every week, at least until March 2026. Then we'll see where I go from here.
